Health and Wellness
Health and Wellness careers are excellent ways to give back to your community and can be very personally rewarding. Whether you are considering a field in which you provide direct care to patients and clients, or you are considering a related field, UTTC has an option for you.
Community Health (HLH) - Students who pursue a Community Health degree at UTTC will be more fully prepared to be public health leaders who can design, implement, advocate for, and evaluate efforts to promote healthy behaviors and social conditions in a wide range of vocational areas at entry level positions. The Program would provides both academic foundation, professional preparation, and will assist in developing the skills necessary to change high-risk behaviors and social patterns in a variety of settings, both on and off the reservation. The degree will place emphasis on a wide range of health topics including, but not limited to: environmental science, injury prevention, gerontology, medical terminology, multicultural health, nutrition, and personal and consumer health.
*Health Information Technology (HIT) - Are you interested in a challenging and dynamic career in health care but aren't sure you want direct contact with patients? Health/Medical Records professionals are an important part of the health care delivery system and help steer the health care industry. If you like to analyze thinkgs, work with computers, see improvement, and are generally excited about change, HIT may be for you! Graduates of the HIT AAS program are eligible to write the national examination for the RHIT credentials.
*Injury Prevention/Community Health (IP) - Utilizing state of the art technology, students learn about effective program planning, implementation, management, and evaluation processes of the Public Health Model. Graduates work as Injury Prevention Specialists, Community Health Representatives, Suicide Counselors, Traffic Specialists and other community services.
*Nutrition and Foodservice (NF) - Prepare to work in WIC programs, diabetes and wellness programs, hospital or elderly care food service, casino kitchens or private restaurants. Students have an opportunity to become credentialed as Certified Dietary Managers by passing a national exam.
*Online Suicide Prevention Training Course - As well as offering their degree courses online, the IP Department is offering an eight-week training course on suicide prevention based upon the public health model. The course is culturally relevant to American Indians and adapts to specific community health issues. Please contact lcarlson@uttc.edu for further information.
Practical Nursing (PN) - Accredited nationally by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission**, graduates of the PN program are employed in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, home health, mental health, and community settings under the direction of registered nurses and physicians.
