Children with Disabilities

The Child Development Center has what is referred to as an "inclusive model" for children with disabilities. This means that all children are accepted at the centers as long as their parents are UTTC students. Children with disabilities participate in the daily activities the same way as their peers without disabilities.

Some children need special services, depending on their unique characteristics. If it has been decided, by a team that includes the family, that a child would benefit from additional services, a plan is developed that is in the best interest of the child. Since the parent or guardian knows the child best, the parent or guardian plays a major role in developing this plan with assistance from the Center staff.

Referral for Evaluation

You as a parent or guardian can refer your child for a special education evaluation. If you have concerns about your child's progress and would like more information, please feel free to visit with your child's teacher, the center director, or Lisa Azure, the CDC Administrator.

The Earlier, the Better!

Young children, ages birth to five, are learning new things every day. There is a huge amount of growth during these early years. That's one of the reasons why it is so important for your child to get extra help if he or she needs it during this period of development.

BECEP and Standing Rock Early Childhood Tracking

The Child Development Center has a relationship with both BECEP (Bismarck Early Childhood Education Program) and Standing Rock Early Childhood Tracking in place that is developed to meet the needs of all of the children in the centers.

If your child has a disability, the Center works closely with these two agencies. BECEP has a half-day program in Bismarck that your child can attend if he or she has a disability. This is provided at no cost to you, or your family, if your child is eligible. Standing Rock Tracking has two paraprofessionals here on campus. Their role is to help you "make sense" of the process and to work with your child the half-day that he or she is at the Center.

We are here to help you with this process.

Remember, these services are to benefit you and your child - no decisions will be made without your voice being heard!
