President's Proclamation

Health and Wellness Initiative

Whereas, United Tribes Technical College is a close-knit community of like-minded people, who share the goal of serving students and their families,

And whereas, illness, disease, accidents and injury pose a constant threat to the well being of the campus population, especially American Indians, who face greater risks of exposure and incidents than the mainstream population,

And whereas, health and wellness programs in school and work settings have contributed to improved learning, better test scores, lower rates of absenteeism and improved productivity,

And whereas, numerous successful health promotion programs have been created and operated at UTTC for the benefit of certain target groups and individuals,

And whereas, a group of professional health care specialists and educators at UTTC, known as the “Wellness Circle,” have conducted planning and strategy meetings to guide development of a comprehensive UTTC health and wellness initiative,

And whereas, the UTTC health and wellness effort is a timely undertaking of our own initiative that parallels wellness efforts elsewhere, including the “Native (or holistic) wellness movement,” the national “Healthy People 2010” project, and the “Healthy North Dakota” program.

And whereas, the UTTC health and wellness initiative is ready for implementation among the entire campus population,

I therefore proclaim, that all employees, students and families of United Tribes Technical College, are urged to participate individually and collectively in the UTTC Health and Wellness Initiative, to do so with full cooperation and enthusiasm, and to strive to improve and sustain the health and wellness of the entire campus community.

Signed this 19th Day of August, 2002 by UTTC President, David M. Gipp.
