Position Title: Elementary School Guidance Counselor

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
- Provide personal, social, academic and school-to-work counseling for students individually or in groups.

Network with parents regarding their children’s concerns, promoting healthy family relationships through parenting, counseling and other activities.

Conduct classroom development guidance classes with all students.

Provide leadership in a Student Assistance Program, securing the information needed for assessment, intervention, follow-up and appropriate referrals, which includes coordinating the Building Level Support Team.

Collaborate with administration, parents, staff and students to assist in establishing and implementing policies, procedures and programs, which promote the achievement of our school mission.

Work with the Principal in coordinating the response to crisis situations.

Provide support and consultation to school staff and parents as a member of the school team.

Network with UTTC Departments and Community Agencies in family interventions and in making appropriate referrals for family relationships which may include Child Abuse/Neglect, Domestic Violence and/or Chemical Addiction.

Continue professional development and maintain confidentiality and professional ethical standards required by State and Federal Statutes.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE OR EXPERTISE:
Familiarity and practical application of counseling techniques and methods. Ability to organize and lead counseling “group” and conduct individual/personal counseling sessions. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Effective communication skills, sensitivity to Native American culture, and disadvantaged students. Ability to relate to diverse age groups.
Ability to communicate with faculty and staff about student characteristics needs and specialized areas of interest.
Working knowledge of support and federal agencies.
A demonstrated ability in prevention, mediation and advocacy of student concerns. Familiarity with substance abuse, the family system and general counseling issues including esteem, social skills, assertiveness, depression and suicide.
Preference will be given to bona
fide American Indian applicants in accordance with
