SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education, the instructor performs the following duties:

  1. Instructs students based upon the master course schedule, degree plans and curricula as approved by the Curriculum committee and the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education in automotive service technology.
  2. Develops culturally-relevant curricula, lesson plans and other postsecondary coursework materials that achieve student competencies and industry/workforce standards.
  3. Assists with the orientation, entry and graduate assessment, registration and advising of students; serves as the primary advisor for the AST students.
  4. Monitors and reports student attendance and academic progress daily, at mid-term at the end of finals week through the Jenzabar system.
  5. Refers students to appropriate academic support and student/campus life services.
  6. Reviews and makes recommendations to the department chair regarding the acquisition of instructional materials and supplies.
  7. Participates in student learning assessments, student advising, program evaluation, classroom observations, institutional committees, professional development, vocational club, and other activities required by the institution.
  8. Will participate in graduation commencement wearing cap and gown.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Based on experience and credentials, the instructor may serve as department chair with oversight of other AST instructor(s).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office, classroom, and auto shop conditions.   Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and lift up to 50 lbs. Normal working hours are from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch break.  For flexible scheduling, arrangements will be made with the Department Chair and the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education.

UTTC instructors must be sensitive to the cultures of the students enrolled at the college, must be willing to learn about those cultures, and must be willing to integrate multi-cultural perspectives where appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Experience:  Instructor shall have a minimum of four (4) years (8,000 hours) of progressive work experience in the occupation to be taught.  Successful passage of an approved competency examination may be substituted for one (1) year (2,000 hours) of work experience.  Credit for up to two (2) years (4,000 hours) will be given to those completing an approved specialized training program.          

2.  Preparation:  Holding a high school diploma or have passed the high school equivalency examination.  All instructors shall complete thirty-six clock hours or three quarter credit hours of approved pre-service vocational teacher education.  In addition, they shall obtain approved in- service vocational teacher education credits, until a total of twenty-one quarter credit hours have been acquired.  The total of twenty-one quarter credit hours must be acquired within a four-year period.

3.  Technical Competency:  The instructor must possess a valid driver’s license and must hold a current Master ASE certification in the area considered for initial certifi­cation.

4.  Education Credentials:  The instructor must possess an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology from an accredited postsecondary institution.  Must have or be able to obtain a CTE teaching certificate for the state of North Dakota.

Preference will be given to bona fide American Indian applicants in accordance with UTTC policies and Federal Indian regulations for such preference.
