SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Practical Nursing program is directly under the supervision of the Vice President of Academic, Career and Technical Education. Under the direct supervision of the PN Director, performs all or some of the following duties:
- Instructs students based upon the master course schedule, degree plans, and curricula approved by the Curriculum Committee and the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education for the instruction of Practical Nursing coursework. Will team-teach with other PN faculty where student enrollments and activities require, including nursing clinical.
- Assists with the orientation, assessment, registration, advising and tutoring of students. Will diligently prepare and maintain student records.
- Develops culturally-relevant curricula, lesson plans and other postsecondary coursework materials that achieve student competencies and meet industry workforce standards. Course syllabi will be updated and submitted on a semester basis to the Registrar’s office and to the academic vice president.
- Facilitates student learning in clinical practice settings through agreements.
- Monitors and reports student attendance and academic progress daily, at mid-terms, and at the end of Finals week through the Jenzabar system.
- Select, monitor and evaluate preceptors and student learning experiences. Also monitors and provides appropriate support of nursing graduates taking professional exams.
- Participates in regular staff meetings to assess student learning outcomes, classroom management and effective teaching, program planning, resource needs, and student learning experiences.
- Maintains and protects nursing classroom and lab areas and resources including equipment and supplies.
- Refers students to appropriate academic support and student/campus life services.
- Assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing policies and procedures related to student admissions, progression, retention and graduation consistent with institutional policies.
- Reviews and makes recommendations to the academic department chair regarding program needs, informational changes to the college catalog, departmental policies and procedures, and acquisition of instructional materials and supplies.
- Participates in student learning outcome assessments, student advising, program evaluation, classroom observations, institutional committees, all hands conversation meetings, professional development activities, vocational club, and other activities required by the institution.
- Participates in activities that facilitate maintaining the faculty member’s own nursing competencies and professional expertise in the area of teaching responsibility.
- Assist the academic department chair with the necessary preparations for comprehensive evaluations and certifications by the N.D. Department of Career and Technical Education, by the state and national nursing boards, and for re-accreditation by the NCA Higher Learning Commission.
- Will participate in special professional nursing ceremonies.
- Will participate in graduation commencement wearing cap and gown.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Students in lab and clinical settings.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office and classroom conditions. Normal working hours are from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch break. For flexible scheduling, arrangements will be made with the academic department chair and the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education.
UTTC instructors must be sensitive to the cultures of the students enrolled at the college, must be willing to learn about those cultures, and must be willing to integrate multi-cultural perspectives where appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Individual must at least have a bachelor’s degree, preferably a master’s degree or working toward a master’s degree, in Nursing from an accredited postsecondary institution. Possess an unencumbered active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Dakota.
Must have had at least two years with prior experiences with professional clinical and instructional settings. Must maintain current CPR credential. Must have or be able to obtain a CTE teaching certificate for the state of North Dakota. Ability to work with diverse groups of people is desirable.
