Position Title: Extension Educator for Gardening, Food Security & Youth Development
Department: UTTC Land Grant Programs
Reports Directly To: Land Grant Director
Status: Exempt, Full-Time

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Land Grant Director, the Extension Educator, Gardening, Food Security and Youth Development will be responsible for performing the following tasks and duties:

  1. Develop and conduct educational programs for the UTTC community, including youth activities.
  2. Collaborate with the NDSU horticulture specialist to develop and maintain the Research and Demonstration Garden including vegetable and fruit test plots, traditional garden spots, community garden sites, and youth garden.
  3. Work collaboratively with the Land Grant director and others to fund program activities through grant writing and partnerships.
  4. Develop and publish programs, curriculums, and materials using written, technological and verbal presentations.
  5. Work as a team with the Land Grant program staff to develop and deliver educational programs that meet the needs of Tribal communities served by UTTC.
  6. Work collaboratively with other UTTC Programs and government entities (tribes, state, and federal) relating to Land Grant goals and objectives.
  7. Participate at meetings, conferences, and workshops as needed.
  8. Provide progress reports to UTTC administration and other collaborative agencies as needed.
  9. Travel out of state or locally as necessary to carry out duties, goals and objectives
  10. Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office conditions.  Normal working hours are from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm.  Position may require overnight travel.  May need to work additional hours to complete program deadlines as needed.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Baccalaureate degree in agriculture, horticulture, natural sciences, youth development or other related field.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work with Native American communities, agencies and institutions of higher education.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with Tribal officials, collaborative partners, and other agency representatives.
  • Work experiences with community education e.g. Extension, vocational education, or community gardens.
  • Ability to make effective presentations in Native American communities, agencies, and related organizations.
