SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to assist in a wide range of gardening projects. This position will begin immediately and will continue through-out this summer and fall. We will also add two (2) more similar positions at the end of the spring semester. These two additional positions will be available for part-and full-time summer and autumn employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Learning to identify and label trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses in our college gardens;
  2. Learn to identify traditional plants;
  3. Provide administrative assistance with student gardening programs;
  4. Assist in preparing, planting, maintaining and harvesting in our college gardens;
  5. Learn to measure and evaluate growing environments;
  6. Assist in maintaining the Anne Kuyper Community Garden, Kid Gardens and garden storage shed;
  7. Assist in planting and maintaining Dragonfly Garden, Skill Center Garden, Gazebo Gardens, and Medicine Wheel Garden.

SUPERVISION:

Will not supervise other staff but will assist with the supervision of elementary youth participating in the gardening programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment will entail indoor and outdoor tasks. The incumbent will experience working in a variety of weather conditions. Working in weather conditions of cold, heat, wind, rain and light snow is expected (when non-threatening). Safety training will be provided and appropriate work-wear discussed and provided.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

We will start off slowly to condition our bodies for endurance, strength and exposure to the weather.. Bending, kneeling, weed pulling, and lifting 20lbs or less is required. Tools such as rakes, shovels, pitch forks, pruners, wheel barrels, carts and tarps will be used. We will often work in tandum to avoid injury. Appropriate work-wear, not street clothes, will be provided to ensure safety and comfort.

  3. Willingness to to work on diverse tasks;
  4. Be committed to a teamwork approach to meeting project goals.
Preference for this position will be given to United Tribes Technical College students.

Preference will be given to bona fide American Indian applicants in accordance with UTTC policies and Federal Indian regulations for such preference.

If selected for the position, the applicant is subject to a complete background investigation with favorable determination.
