Position Title: Elementary School 6th Grade Teacher

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Theodore Jamerson Elementary Principal, performs all or some of the following duties:
  1. Meets assigned classes at the time as indicated by the supervisor and provides instruction in the required subjects or in his/her area of specialty.
  2. Establishes and maintains a classroom atmosphere which will facilitate effective learning.
  3. Guides the learning of the student toward the achievement of individual goals which have been set, where applicable, by the teacher, student and parent.
  4. Prepares for the classes assigned and shows written evidence upon request of the supervisor.
  5. Provides a safe learning environment for the students in the classroom.
  6. Supervises students as assigned and needed.
  7. Incorporates Indian culture into the instruction in subject areas where appropriate.
  8. Evaluates the progress of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required by school policy.
  9. Communicates reports of student progress to the student and his/her parents at the end of each grading period and at other times if requested.
  10. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by school policy, the administration and the Indian Education Act of 1978.
  11. Plans and supervises meaningful tasks for teacher aides and/or volunteers designed to facilitate student learning.
  12. Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
  13. Contributes to the development and continual improvement of school programs by sharing expertise on committees as requested during released time if possible.
  14. Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced courses at institutions of higher learning.
  15. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION:

Frequently makes decision of average difficulty regarding classroom procedures, discipline, promotion or retention of students, field trips and school policies.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal working hours are from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. will need to be able to bend, stoop and lift in the course work duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Four (4) year degree from an accredited College or University in Elementary Education. Two years full time paid experience preferred. Current North Dakota Teaching Certificate. Experience working with Indian children preferred.

Strong working knowledge in computer applications both IBM and MACs.

Applicant will need to attend occasional meetings requiring over night travel.

Preference will be given to bona fide American Indian applicants in accordance with UTTC policies and Federal Indian regulations for such preference.
