North Dakota Tribal leaders gather for speech

TRIBAL-STATE RELATIONS: The elected leaders of four of the five tribal nations located in whole or in part in North Dakota were at the State Capitol in Bismarck January 5 for the State of the Tribal Relationship Address. Tribal chairs, from left, David "Doc" Brien, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, who presented the speech to a joint session of the State Legislature and state officials including the governor; Marcus J. Wells, Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara Nation; Myra Pearson, Spirit Lake Nation; and Ron His Horse Is Thunder, Standing Rock Dakota-Lakota Nation. A bill adding the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate to membership on the ND Indian Affairs Commission is under consideration by the Legislature.
