AIHEC presents tribal college award to Burns
1 March 2005

Award presented to Senator Burns

      U. S. Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT), at podium, was recognized February 17 by the American Indian Higher Education Consortium with the Abourezk/Skeen award for his support of the nation's tribal colleges and universities. "I'm honored to be in the category of these two great men who worked diligently to improve the education opportunities for Native Americans," said Burns. The award is named in honor of former Senator James G. Abourezk (D-SD), one of the first Congressional supporters of tribal colleges, and the late Congressman Joseph R. Skeen (R-NM) who championed tribal college funding in the 1990s. At the Washington, DC event in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, from left, AIHEC Executive Director Gerald Gipp, U. S.
