A group of students in the Teacher Education program at United Tribes Technical College have joined with a group of pre-service teachers from the University of Mary to participate in a teaching experience at the Heritage Center here in Bismarck. The students have the opportunity to observe each other actually teaching a group of Bismarck Public School students a Social Studies lesson. The Heritage Center provides the setting, as well as a collection of materials the students can use to teach their lessons.
This past week, the University of Mary students taught the lessons, with the UTTC students observing. After the lesson, the students had the opportunity to give each other feedback and encouragement. After the UTTC students complete the orientation to the materials, they will each partner with a University of Mary student to develop a team teaching experience.
According to Cindy Balliet, UTTC faculty, the students all enjoyed the opportunity. It served as a cross-cultural learning event, as well, in that the University of Mary students asked the UTTC students to share information with them about the content from a Native perspective, wanting to make sure it was accurate. UTTC students participating were Janice St. Clair (Three Affiliated), Kahnya Cornelius (Oneida Nation), Crystal Black Cloud (Standing Rock), Celeste Phelps (Rolla, ND), Beverly Clairmont (Lower Brule), Tanya Mendoza (Turtle Mountain Chippewa), and Emmaline Tallman (Pine Ridge).
