Guest artists interpret dance performance
16 March 2006

Tommy Christian and Robert Meyer

FRIENDSHIP IS METAPHORE: Tommy Christian (Fort Peck), Poplar, MT, says it may sound odd that he's involved with the ballet but there's a good reason. He and his collaborator Robert Meyer, at left, told a class of UTTC students March 15 about their involvement in a performance that merges ballet with traditional Native American dance and history. Christian, powwow announcer and award-winning champion traditional dancer (United Tribes International Powwow 1996, 1999, 2005) and Meyer, an award-winning commercial and fine art photographer, are guest artists with The Encounter, a ballet production that depicts the first encounter between European-American explorers and American Indians. Like their friendship, they say the performance expresses a message of acceptance about two cultures encountering each other. The Encounter performance is presented by the Northern Plains Ballet in Bismarck on March 25, Dickinson April 6 and in Jamestown April 11.
