Weightlifting team organized at United Tribes
By Brad Barter, Thunderbirds Weightlifting Coach, Strengthening Lifestyles Family Specialist
21 March 2012

The United Tribes "Thunderbirds" Weightlifting Club/Team got off to a good start during Spring semester. Two dozen individuals are involved, including students, staff and faculty.

The group meets in the weight room area of the James Henry Community Gymnasium. Club hours are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Anyone affiliated with United Tribes, who is at least 18 years of age, is welcome.

Russell Swagger, VP Student and Campus Services, is the group's president and assistant coach. He's also an avid lifter.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has not become involved in the sport, so the club has joined the USA Power lifting Association. The goal is to begin attending competitions and later host sanctioned state competitions at United Tribes.

In terms of competition, the club adheres to the Wilks Formula as established by USA Power Lifting and the U. S. Olympic Committee. Members focus on the following lifts: Bench Press, Squat and Dead Lift.

I'd like to thank several employees who've stepped up in a big way volunteering their time and energy to help get the club going:

Graphic Designer Martha Garreau, of Arrow Graphics, created the team logo. She's also a lifter and serves as the assistant women's coach and competition chaperone. Assisting as men's coaches and competition chaperones are: Gregory Sturm, Jeffrey Moser and Mark Mindt, all lifters.

Assisting the coaches are LTE student's Nick Houston, Jace Jackson and Rayel Yazzie, all lifters.

Staffers Judith Red Tomahawk and Marcus Austin also serve as administrative assistants and chaperones.

I'm very pleased with the enthusiasm expressed thus far by everyone. We're setting up individual workouts for each team member. We also plan to expand the space and facilities for weightlifting.
