PARTING GIFT: Sheri Baker receives a going-away gift from General Education Instructor Marge Palaniuk to take into retirement. Staff, students and friends showered Baker with gifts and well-wishes as she ended a long and productive employee association with the college on March 2. She came to UTTC fresh out of Turtle Mountain Community High School in 1980 and went to work as a typesetter for United Tribes News. She took up the path of higher education at Turtle Mountain Community College and the University of North Dakota, and later returned to UTTC as a popular classroom instructor and grants administrator; finishing her last five years as the college's director of Community Wellness Services. "Community colleges are the best thing that happened to Indian Country," she said. "I know firsthand that the associate degree is the most exciting. I know how special it is for our students." Baker plans to get some R & R, catch up on unfinished projects, and maintain her commitment to serving as one of six members of the North Dakota Probation and Parole Board.
