Healing Song for Mother Earth
7 April 2008

Healing Song

SPRING EQUINOX: Members of the United Tribes campus community joined with tribal people across the country on the first full day of spring to pray and sing a healing song for Mother Earth. Staff members and students gathered for the ceremony outside the college’s Lewis Goodhouse Wellness Center on March 21 at 11 a.m. (Central Time). Tribal people across North America had been alerted by e-mail to participate in what was planned as a worldwide ceremony titled "8,000 Drums." Clan grandmothers of the Huron tribe in Canada had put out a call to Indians everywhere to play the drum, sing, and pray for help in the healing process for the earth and the environment, which is under constant assault. According to the e-mail, the purpose was to fulfill a prophecy of the Otomi people who are Mayan Olmec and Toltec descendants. The UTTC observance was coordinated by counselor Julie Cain.
