Interior Secretary visits United Tribes
27 April 2009

HONORED GUEST: United Tribes Technical College President David M. Gipp thanked Interior Secretary Ken Salazar April 25 following a meeting with tribal leaders at the college in Bismarck. It was the former Colorado Senator’s first visit to North Dakota and apparently his first visit with tribal leaders in Indian Country since his appointment by President Obama to head the Department of Interior. Tribal leaders from North and South Dakota participated in the meeting with Salazar. The main subject was how to improve law enforcement on reservations by addressing the shortage of trained personnel. There is only one tribal law enforcement training academy in the country. United Tribes has advanced a proposal for a second one that would be located on the college’s campus. United Tribes has had Criminal Justice training as part of its curriculum since the early 1970s.
