UTTC Graduation Ceremony to be seen Online

BISMARCK (UTN) - The 2012 commencement ceremony for graduates of United Tribes Technical College will be streamed online. All the speeches and ceremony, the graduates in gowns, the diplomas, honor songs, handshakes and hugs, can be seen on the Internet Friday, May 4 beginning at 1 p.m. (Central Time) at this location: http://www.uttc.edu/media/graduation.asp.

      The telecast will showcase the graduation of 125 students who earned Bachelor of Science or Associate of Applied Science Degrees, or Certificates of Completion, from the college's academic and vocational programs. The graduates are from 21 different tribes around the country. The online telecast is offered by the college to connect friends and family who are unable to make it to Bismarck for the event.

      The program will be produced by students and staff in the college's Media Arts program, a division of the United Tribes Art/Art Marketing Program. Technical support will be provided by the college's Information Technology staff.

      The preferred event setting is Lone Star Arena, the powwow dance arbor in the center of the United Tribes campus. If weather threatens, the ceremony will be held in the college gymnasium.

      Keynote speaker Chairman Billy Bell of the Ft. McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, McDermitt, Nevada. Bell is a 2002 graduate of the United Tribes Criminal Justice Program. He served six years on the tribal council before becoming Ft. McDermitt chairman in 2009. He is also president of the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada, an organization of the 27 tribes in the state.

      Also attending the commencement ceremony will be tribal leaders on the college's governing board who represent the tribes of North Dakota: Three Affiliated Tribes, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, Spirit Lake Tribe, Standing Rock Tribe, and Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

      The ceremony concludes the 2011-12 academic year. United Tribes has been celebrating student graduations regularly since 1969 when the college began offering post-secondary academic and technical education for American Indian students and their families.
