Connecting on tour of Tribal Colleges
29 May 2012

INDIAN HUMOR: Ever-charming Wallace “Butch” Thunder Hawk (Dakota/Lakota) coaxes a laugh April 1 from three visitors to his Tribal Arts studio at United Tribes Technical College. From left: Robyn Hollingshead, Arts and Cultures Program director, Gabrielle Strong (Sisseton/Wahpeton) Native Arts and Culture Program officer, and Shelley Shreffler, Environmental Program officer, all with the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Eden Prairie, MN. The visit was part of a tribal colleges tour sponsored by the American Indian College Fund. Thunder Hawk’s tenure as the college’s tribal arts instructor reaches back to the mid-1970s. His studio is filled with period-correct and contemporary work by him and his students.
