Pre-service teachers from three local chapters of the Student North Dakota Education Association (SNDEA) learned how to implement the Daily Five program into their future classrooms.

The three-day professional development training took place in March at United Tribes Technical College.

Students from UTTC’s SNDEA chapter were joined by their colleagues from the University of Mary and Dickinson State’s Extended Campus at BSC to advance their knowledge and learn strategies for implementing the program.

The Daily Five is a classroom structure that helps develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.

Presenters were Dr. Jean Hall, Jeanette Myhre Elementary School principal, and Tara Hofmann. All of the training materials, and the catered meals, were provided by a SOAR Grant that was applied for and received in January by UTTC’s SNDEA Chapter.

The pre-service teachers received certificates of completion for the training. Discussions are underway about future joint collaborations and professional development workshops in the fall with all three participating campuses.
