Six teacher candidates in the United Tribes Elementary Education program made scholarly presentations at the North Dakota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (NDACTE) conference. The March 30 gathering at University of Mary, Bismarck, was the annual conference for pre-service teachers from all of the teacher education programs in the state.
Presenting from United Tribes were: Tyson Maxon (Cheyenne River); Yvonne Howling Wolf (Three Affiliated); Billi Jo Gravseth (Standing Rock); Memoree Skinner (Cheyenne River): and Wylee Bearstail (Three Affiliated).
The title of their presentation was "Family Engagement Project", a reflection of considerations for teachers as they work collaboratively with the families of the children they teach. The content was from their EDU 338 Family and Professional Collaborations course taught by Deidre WhiteMan, UTTC Teacher Education faculty.
The conference included the Praxis Bowl, a popular activity among participants, in which students were assigned to teams to compete in a game show format competition. All of the questions in the competition were from the Praxis tests, the exams required for teacher licensure. Tyson, Billi Jo, Wylee and Rolenthea participated in the Praxis Bowl, joined by their Teacher Education peers, Shyanne Schmalz (Standing Rock) and Joelle Bearstail (Three Affiliated).
The next conference will be held at North Dakota State University in spring 2013. At that time, UTTC will select its first Student Teacher of the Year, a prestigious award sponsored by the Association of Teacher Educators, awarded to one pre-service teacher from each of the Teacher Education programs.
