Theodore Jamerson Elementary School, on the campus of United Tribes Technical College, honored all of its students May 11 for a successful 2010-11 academic year with a powwow in the college gymnasium.
Ten students in particular, who completed grade 8 and graduated from TJES, were singled out for recognition: Kelly G. Belgarde, parent Dennis Belgarde; Gary J. Burcham, parents Dawnna and Cameron Eller; Zachary A. Burdick, parents April Little Ghost and Russell Burdick; Ebony H. Cook, parent Marlarae Cook; Kennedy C. Foote, parent Rhonda Foote; Marques T. Has Horns, parents Phyllis and Tony Iron Road; Shania J. Lee, parents Shirley Dupris and Mikell Starr; Briarrose Little Bird, parent Bernice Morning Gun; Katherine K. Nickaboine, parents Jennifer LaFontaine and Julian Nickaboine; and Michelle Speelman, parent Robert Speelman. They were instructed by Vicky Stevens.
Students from these schools also participated in the event: Wakpala School, Standing Rock Elementary School and Standing Rock Middle School. The host drum was Wise Spirit Singers from United Tribes. TJES student Brendan (Peanut) Young provided honor songs; culture and language Instructor Tom Red Bird gave the prayer in Lakota. Retiring instructor Dr. John Derby was also recognized for his service to TJES and United Tribes.
Dairy Queen Trip
Twenty-three 3rd through 7th graders from TJES rode a bus April 8 to Dairy Queen in downtown Bismarck for ice cream Blizzards. For the month of April, students with perfect attendance also went to Space Aliens. In past months students with perfect attendance had pizza at RMC and Pizza Hut.
