BISMARCK (UTN) - The United Tribes Technical College coaching staff is in place for the 2005-06 basketball season. The coaching duo of Ruth Buffalo and Erik Abbey will return for the Lady Thunderbirds while the men have a new lineup.
Jason Horner, the team's assistant coach last year, was named head coach of the Thunderbird men on July 5. Prior to coming to UTTC he was an assistant coach at University of Mary for four years.
Horner played college ball Minot State University, where he was the 1998 NDCAC Most Valuable Graduating Senior and an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.
Horner holds a degree in Computer Science and Information Systems Management and a Masters Degree in Management. He is employed as a senior software specialist with National Information Solutions Cooperative, Bismarck, ND.
He succeeds Joe Ware who chose to end his coaching career after the 2004-05 season.
Horner's Assistant is Travis Albers (Turtle Mountain), who graduated in 2005 from University of Mary and 1998 from UTTC. Albers played for the Thunderbirds from 1996-98 and was named an Academic All American and North Dakota All State player. He played for Delaware State University in 1998-99.
Ruth Buffalo (Three Affiliated) returns for her second season as head coach of the Lady Thunderbirds. Buffalo is the college's wellness activity coordinator. She earned a Masters Degree in Management in 2005 from the University of Mary.
Buffalo played college ball at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and Huron University, Huron, SD. She was an All-Conference selection as a senior and was invited to a professional basketball showcase in Atlanta, Georgia in 2002.
Assistant Lady Thunderbirds Coach for the second year is Erik Abbey (Three Affiliated and Coushatta Tribe). He is a 1997 graduate of Turtle Mountain High School and a 1999 graduate of UTTC in Office Technology.
Abbey played college ball at UTTC and was on the team that went to nationals two years in a row. He is employed at the UTTC post office.
