United Tribes NewsNorth Dakota Tribal Colleges to Host American Indian College Fund Tour
24 August 2007
DENVER, COLORADO - Friends of Native American education will meet in North Dakota September 6-9 and tour local-area tribal colleges. The tour is sponsored by the American Indian College Fund (the Fund), a nonprofit organization that raises scholarship funds for Indian students to attend tribal colleges.
During the North Dakota tour, participants from across the nation will gather and meet with students, professors, and college presidents at the United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) in Bismarck, North Dakota, and the newly developing $40 million Sitting Bull College on the Standing Rock Reservation. The purpose is for friends of the Fund to observe tribal college operations first-hand, learning about their roles, their students, and their needs, and to meet with local community leaders.
Participants will also have the chance to attend an American Indian History and Policy seminar, presented from an American Indian perspective by Richard B. Williams, President and CEO of the American Indian College Fund, and Dr. Cheryl Long Feather, Research Director for United Tribes Technical College.
The tour will include cultural activities led by guides who offer an Indian perspective about historical events. As part of the cultural experience, participants will attend the United Tribes International Powwow, which will feature dancers and drummers, including KAHURANGI, the Maori Dance Theatre, which will perform traditional dances of the Polynesian peoples of New Zealand.
With its credo "Educating the Mind and Spirit," the Denver-based American Indian College Fund is the nation's largest provider of private scholarships for American Indian students, providing 5,000 scholarships annually for students seeking to better their lives and communities through education.
