‘Parade of Champions’ set for September 10

BISMARCK (UTN) - Entries are invited for the United Tribes “Parade of Champions,” scheduled for Saturday, September 10 through downtown Bismarck. The event highlights American Indian culture from those attending the United Tribes International Powwow.

      All groups and individuals from the Bismarck/Mandan community and region are welcome to participate. Entry forms are available from Michelle R. West, parade coordinator, 701-255-3285 x 1355, or mwest@uttc.edu. The fee is $40. Entries that wish to be judged are an additional $15.

      Cash awards are offered in four judged categories: Best Horse Group; Best Dance Group; Best Youth/Cultural Entry; and Best Overall Float/Theme Entry. The theme is: Remembrance “Wokiksuye.”

      Major General David A. Sprynczynatyk, Adjutant General of the North Dakota National Guard is the parade’s Grand Marshall.

      Parade of Champions staging begins at 8 a.m. at the State Capitol grounds with the start scheduled for 9:30. The route is from Boulevard Avenue south on Sixth Street to Avenue C, west one block to Fifth Street, and south on Fifth Street through downtown to Kirkwood Mall, where participants disperse in the parking lot.

      The 42nd Annual United Tribes International Powwow begins September 8 on the campus of United Tribes Technical College. It attracts over 10,000 visitors to the community for the weekend. In April, the powwow was listed by USA TODAY among the top “ten great places to be wowed by American Indian culture.” Spectators from all backgrounds are welcomed to join the circle – from the community, around the country and abroad – to share the traditions of one of North Dakota’s premier cultural events.
