BISMARCK (UTN) - School classes and youth groups are invited to Youth Day at the United Tribes International Powwow on Friday, September 9.
The event offers an educational experience in music and culture for young people and powwow visitors. It takes place on the campus of United Tribes Technical College and concludes with “grand entry” in the powwow arena.
Youth Day includes tribal music and culture, audience participation, and a performance by the powwow’s featured cultural group, Chayag, from the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. A group of educators from Standing Rock will make a presentation about Lakota language instruction using the child-friendly television series “Berenstain Bears.”
Local and tribal school groups are invited to attend as part of organized outings. There is no admission fee for students, teachers or escorts.
Youth Day begins at 9 a.m. and runs through the morning near the college administration building on Sisseton Road. Groups may bring their own lunches or purchase lunch from a variety of vendors in the food court and later participate in the 1 p.m. Powwow Grand Entry in Lone Star Arena.
Teachers are encouraged to register in advance by contacting coordinator Annette Beyer 701-255-3285 x 1541, firstname.lastname@example.org.
