United Tribes students to be involved in powwow webcast
3 September 2010

BISMARCK (UTN) - A group of United Tribes students will be asked to apply their classroom learning during the upcoming United Tribes International Powwow.

Students enrolled in Media Arts in the college’s Art/Art Marketing Program will help produce a webcast of the powwow’s biggest night on Saturday, September 11.

MY TRIBE TV will webcast the United Tribes Powwow Saturday, September 11 from 7-11 p.m. (Central Time) at http://mytribetv.com/.

The event will be carried on the internet from 7-11 p.m. (Central Time). MyTribeTV will stream the event with moving video and sound at the website: http://mytribetv.com/.

“We know there are some people in the region who will be unable to make it to Bismarck for the powwow,” said David M. Gipp, United Tribes president. “For that reason it’s good for us to provide a way for them to take it in. And, of course, there are people far and wide, across the country and even across the world, who will be interested in seeing our event.”

The Saturday evening schedule includes the colorful grand entry of hundreds of dancers, drum and dance competition, intertribal dancing, a performance from the featured cultural group the Native Smoke Dancers, and introduction of the new Miss Indian Nations.

Media Arts Instructor Shawn Holz will direct students Cody American Horse, Codi Blackbird, Stacey Grant and Heather Kleinsasser as they focus cameras on action in the powwow arena.

The production will be supported by personnel from the college’s Information Technology Department and Office of Public Information, and the powwow sound contractor, Rezonance Productions, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

This will be the second United Tribes webcast of a major event. In May, MyTribeTV carried the college’s 2010 commencement ceremony. The Seattle based, Native-owned company specializes in webcasting tribal meetings, celebrations, and athletic events.

The United Tribes International Powwow is in its 41st year. It runs from Thursday, September 9 through Sunday, September 12, on the campus of United Tribes Technical College.
