Lakota helicopters named in ceremony at United Tribes
5 September 2012

HONORED & AIR WORTHY: George Iron Shield (Standing Rock) stands before a UH-72A Lakota Helicopter after conducting a naming ceremony and blessing the aircraft September 4 at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck. He was part of a group of tribal citizens who helped plan and conduct a dedication for two of the light utility aircraft before they go into routine logistic, support and emergency duty for the North Dakota Army National Guard. Iron Shield blessed the two, giving one the name Eagle and the other Turtle. Tribal officials were present from all of North Dakota’s Tribal Nations, along with the state’s governor and members of the North Dakota Congressional Delegation, guardsmen and women, and Tribal Honor Guards. The public program was intended to symbolize the respect and partnership between Native Warriors honored by the namesake aircraft and the Guard Soldiers who will operate them.
