Innovative language project highlighted at powwow
17 October 2011

CARTOON BEARS SPEAK LAKOTA: Sunshine Archambault-Carlow, Education Manager for the Standing Rock Tribe, introduces Mama and Papa Bear September 10 during the United Tribes International Powwow. The costumed figures from the popular Berenstain Bears PBS cartoons were popular with youngsters attending a screening during Youth Day at the powwow. Twenty episodes of the series have been translated into Dakota and Lakota under the title: Mathó Waúŋšila Thiwáhe, or “The Compassionate Bear Family.” It is the first fully animated cartoon series ever presented entirely in a Native American language. Standing Rock and the Lakota Language Consortium co-produced the series and launched the programming in September with the public television stations in both Dakotas.
