United Tribes Technical College was honored to have Guest speaker Fred Rios of Mandan, a member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, at the UTTC Veterans Day Program Thursday, November 9. Rios served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force as a radar and board operator. He is a past commander of Bismarck’s VFW Post 1326 and current chair of Captain’s Landing Township along the Missouri River.
The Hamann Family Scholarship was presented to Marlee Finley, a student in UTTC’s Tribal Environmental Science program. The honor was announced by UTTC Extended Learning Director Leah Hamann, on behalf of her parents, and in memory of her late brother John R. Hamann, a U.S. Marine. Finley’s “perseverance and desire to succeed” were praised by Hamann in presenting the $500 monetary award.
UTTC staff and student veterans were recognized and honored during the event which was held in the UTTC Cafeteria conference room.
An opening prayer was given by Edon Wills IV, a UTTC Security and Safety officer and member of the Chickahominy Tribe. Honor songs were provided by the Wise Spirit Singers.
